âOnce an object has been incorporated into a painting, it has a new destinyâ
Georges Braque
«These are all the materials you need before you start working. You cannot miss any. I will return when all are in your power.» That said, the demon disappeared from the center of the five-pointed star. «There is no deadline, but the sooner we start, the sooner your torture will end.»
Jeremiah did not stop remembering those words as he observed every day the list that the demon had given him and whose materials he should have as soon as possible. The problem was that one was easy to get, because it was his own blood. The rest, no. Not because they were unattainable, but because working as a painter in the Court had absorbed him. The king barely let him breathe and had to spend more hours painting portraits that were later burned in a fire in front of him because he did not like them. With the consequences that before letting him go home, he whipped him violently, to make him reconsider and it became clear to him at once how the portraits should be. To this, it was necessary to add that, when arriving at house, he had to help his father in the tasks and he fell exhausted on the bed.
The days passed and overwhelm became a prey to his body. He needed to stop the torture that the king inflicted on him before, and the only way was to obtain, once and for all, the materials that the demon had ordered him. He had not reappeared since the day he dictated what he needed and, even if he did not do it or put pressure on him, Jeremiah felt him at his side, watching each step, absorbing his energy.
However, deep down, all were the impediments that he imposed on himself in an unconscious way, because two of them were the hardest for him to achieve: the blood of a virgin and the ashes of a crucifix.
When the demon communicated it to him, Jeremiahâs face became dislocated and he tried to make himself believe that the demon was joking, knowing that he never did. How was he going to steal a crucifix? How was he going to burn it? Moreover, how was he going to murder a girl to get her blood? He would tear a family apart and never forgive him; to another family, of so many others... The phantom of the feat would haunt him the rest of his life. Nevertheless, to avoid a death, was it preferable to die under the yoke of the demon for not fulfilling, or under the whiplashes of the king?
«Will you refuse, Jeremiah? Do you want to know all my anger?» There was no joke in the voice of the demon. Jeremiah shuddered every time he remembered the words. «Who exiled me from Paradise without compassion? Who threw me into the void with no return? To the one you call God! That one who left
